A tragic accident in California has left a family devastated after a mother allegedly drove her car into a canal while intoxicated, resulting in the death of her 4-year-old daughter.
The crash happened late Saturday night, March 8, near Hickman, California. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 26-year-old Juliette Acosta from Oakdale was behind the wheel of her Subaru SUV when it suddenly veered off the road and plunged into an irrigation canal. The reason behind the crash is still unclear.
Acosta’s uncle, who lives nearby, heard the impact and rushed to the scene. He managed to pull Acosta from the sinking car, while a Stanislaus County deputy—who arrived shortly after—helped rescue the little girl. Sadly, despite their efforts, the child didn’t survive. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities say Acosta showed clear signs of intoxication at the scene. She was arrested and taken to the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on suspicion of felony DUI. No details have been released yet about whether she has legal representation or has entered a plea.
The CHP praised the quick and heroic actions of the deputy and Acosta’s uncle, acknowledging their bravery in trying to save the young girl.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving. Authorities continue to investigate the case.
