At Least 39 Dead in Tamil Nadu Political Rally Crush
KARUR, INDIA — A political rally in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu turned deadly on Saturday when a massive crowd crush left at least 39 people dead, including children, officials confirmed.
Tens of thousands had gathered in Karur district for an election campaign event held by actor-turned-politician Vijay. The rally, delayed for several hours, drew huge crowds that became unmanageable, according to local reports.
Images from the aftermath showed shoes, bottles, and personal belongings scattered across the ground, as emergency responders worked to assist the injured. Witnesses described people fainting and collapsing in the packed crowd.
Victims and Survivors
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, speaking from Karur, said the dead included 17 women, 13 men, and nine children. Another 51 people are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
Compensation of one million rupees (about $11,300) has been announced for each bereaved family. Stalin also confirmed that a formal inquiry has been launched into the cause of the disaster.
One man waiting outside a hospital said his brother’s two sons had attended the rally. “The elder one has died, and the younger one is missing. My sister-in-law is in the ICU. I don’t know what to do,” he said.
Political Reactions
Actor and politician Vijay expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling himself “heartbroken” and speaking of “indescribable pain.” He extended condolences to grieving families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “unfortunate and deeply saddening,” offering condolences to the victims’ families.
Deadly Crowd Crushes in India
Mass casualty incidents caused by crowd surges are not uncommon in India. This year alone, several have taken place, including during religious gatherings such as the Kumbh Mela festival and outside sporting venues, raising concerns about crowd management and safety measures at large public events.
