A heartbreaking tragedy took a shocking turn when a Minnesota woman admitted to lying for her twin sister after a devastating crash that killed two Amish children.
The crash happened on September 25, 2023, in Sumner Township when an SUV slammed into a buggy carrying four children. Two of them—7-year-old Wilma Miller and 11-year-old Irma Miller—tragically lost their lives.
At first, Sarah Peterson told authorities she was the driver. But as investigators dug deeper, cracks started forming in her story. Witnesses recalled seeing the driver wearing a specific shirt—one later linked to Sarah’s twin sister, Samantha Peterson. A trail of digital evidence also pointed to Samantha, including chilling internet searches like, “What happens if you get in an accident with an Amish buggy and kill two people?”

As the truth unraveled, prosecutors confirmed that Samantha was behind the wheel. She now faces a staggering 21 felony charges, including vehicular homicide, DUI, and reckless driving. Meanwhile, Sarah, who tried to take the blame, has pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal vehicular operation as part of a plea deal. Her sentencing is set for March 31.
Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge noted that inconsistencies in the sisters’ statements, along with search warrants and data analysis, helped crack the case.
This tragic case, filled with deception and devastating consequences, continues to unfold as the justice system determines the fate of both sisters.
