The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has made public bodycam footage showing the moment an officer shot and killed a 16-year-old near a downtown train station. The video, released on Feb. 21 via Facebook, was accompanied by a cautionary note warning of graphic content.
The Incident Unfolds
The shooting occurred on Jan. 28, when Officer Daniel Gold, a two-year SDPD veteran, fired at 16-year-old Konoa Wilson. Wilson was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Security footage from the station shows Wilson approaching two people near the tracks at around 8:50 p.m. One individual pulled out a gun, prompting Wilson to flee. Gunshots were fired but didn’t hit Wilson. Moments later, Officer Gold’s bodycam captured Wilson running out of the station toward an intersection, where the officer fired at him after shouting, “San Diego Police.”
Police later reported finding a firearm hidden under Wilson’s clothing near his right thigh.

Investigation and Public Reaction

At the time of the shooting, SDPD officers were at the train station for an unrelated incident. Due to conflict-of-interest policies, the San Diego Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation into Wilson’s death.
SDPD Chief Scott Wahl acknowledged the difficulty of watching the footage but emphasized the department’s commitment to transparency. However, the incident has sparked strong emotions in the community.
A candlelight vigil was held for Wilson on Feb. 21, where family and friends remembered him as a joyful and kind-hearted teenager who loved the ocean and had his whole life ahead of him.
What Happens Next?
As investigations continue, the community seeks answers and justice. SDPD has not responded to media inquiries regarding the shooting, and discussions about police use of force remain ongoing in San Diego and beyond.
