Emma Watson has opened up about her complicated relationship with J.K. Rowling, saying there’s “no world” where she could ever cancel the author. The actress, best known for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, spoke candidly about their connection on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast.
Watson highlighted the importance of respect and dignity in conversations, explaining, “I just see this world right now where we seem to be giving permission to this throwing out of people, or that people are disposable. I will always think that’s wrong.” She added that, while she’s open to dialogue with Rowling, she doesn’t want to fuel further tension in the ongoing debate.

The comments come after a period of public tension between Rowling and several Harry Potter stars, including Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, due to Rowling’s anti-transgender statements and the actors’ support for the transgender community.
Responding to Watson, Rowling took to X with a lengthy message, criticizing the actress’s understanding of life. “Like other people who’ve never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is,” Rowling wrote.

Rowling stressed she isn’t owed agreement from actors who once played her characters and defended her right to hold her views. She acknowledged the actors’ freedom to express themselves but said Watson and Radcliffe have treated their former roles as a license to publicly critique her.

Reflecting on past kindness, Rowling mentioned a moment when Watson sent her a handwritten note saying, “I’m so sorry for what you’re going through,” during a period of severe threats against her. Rowling admitted the gesture was appreciated but didn’t fully ease the tension.
Despite the controversy, Watson emphasized she could never erase the positive impact Rowling had on her life, saying the opportunity to portray Hermione will always remain significant. Their relationship, she explained, is complex but grounded in respect for their shared history.
